Problems with first attempt at learning Ruby on Rails
Jun 20th, 2008
My first attempt at learning Ruby on Rails has been thwarted by the latest release of Ruby on Rails v2.1. The book I was reading “Build Your Own Ruby on Rails Web Applications” published by Sitepoint was written very well but outdated. The version in the book is 1.2.3. I was excited about learning to create my own Digg site. I guess that is why Sitepoint was giving away free copies. I looked into purchasing the updated version called Simply Rails 2, but after looking through the forums, this edition had some problems too.
I found a much better book called “Agile Web Development with Rails” third edition. The first edition is among the best selling programming books in the world and won a Jolt award for best technical book. The print version doesn’t some out until October 2008, but you can download a .pdf version now. You will recieve updated .pdf versions as the book is revised. I hope this book turns out to be as good as the reviews.

That is a good book the first one is a good read, I used it more for a reference then anything. I am a visual learner more then a book learner so I am going to recommend to you some sites with video on them … it should help you!

Good luck and don’t give up on Rails it’s a great framework and really does allow you to have more time on other things that are necessary when working on a major project.
